sign of the times?

We still do most of our shopping at good ol Trader Joes, and one of two natural food stores nearby, but in a pinch (or to fill some holes in the grocery list), we need to hit one of the mainstream retailers, though we hardly venture out of the Natural/Organic section. Shaw’s is pretty good, and Stop and Shop has an aisle – interestingly at the exact opposite end of the store from produce, so I also get a workout.

Happy to see more and more (and better) natural and organic choices entering the marketplace. It seems that people are voting with their dollars, and somebody is listening.

I had to pop in Stop and Shop this week. Within the past 6 months one opened near work, and another near home, so the stores are new, clean, and still somewhat unfamilliar to me. When cruising the Natural foods aisle (after powerwalking the entire lenght of the store) looking for some silken tofu (mysteriously hard to find in the usual places lately) I saw a sign taped up in an empty dairy case, apologizing for not having any milk. Rather, any organic milk.

The sign read something to the effect of “Due to the increasing demand for organic products, there is a national shortage of organic milk. More farms are trying to become certified to fill this demand, but this process can take a while…”

A temporary inconvenience, but things are moving in the right direction. Kudo’s America!

A sign of better things to come? We can only watch and see… and continue to vote with our dollars!
